THE DANGERS OF DUST
Nothing shortens the life of your engine like dust. As particles accumulate in your air filters and engine components, they cause severe amounts of abrasive damage, slowly destroying them from the inside.
The real danger zone however, is imperceptible to the naked eye, and wreaks havoc upon your valuable engine components every day. More than 50% of these airborne solid pollutants are made up of particles that are smaller than 20 microns in diameter.
These particles are far worse than coarse particles, as they vastly increase the surface area and volume of abrasive media suspended within the dust, dramatically increasing the damage they cause. As air filter media, and other dust-prevention tools begin to age through their service life, these micro-particles may even bypass these measures entirely, and go straight into your engine.
WHY IS THIS A PROBLEM?
Airborne dust accumulates within your engine over time, and there is no real way to get rid of it except by disassembly, pressure washing, and overhauling. All of these activities are costly and time-consuming.
The purpose of air filters in your intake line is clear, as they prevent this harmful dust from reaching your engine components. No engines, petrol or diesel, can go without some form of protection, as these particles quickly cause accumulation-related failures.
Some examples of these failures include, piston gouging, service line leaks, high intake restriction, poor or premature combustion, lowering of compression ratios leading to poor power transmission, engine knock, high fuel consumption, and a host of other costly problems that need to be fixed.
DO I NEED A PRECLEANER?
The number one enemy of heavy equipment is airborne dust and particles. Engine air filters however, are never full-proof. In the challenging daily conditions your machines face, moisture, abrasive materials, fluctuating temperatures and irregular or inadequate maintenance leaves plenty of room for something to go wrong. Each of these factors can cause a loss of efficacy of filter media, which is designed to be consumable.
As soon as filter media is compromised, dust and other particle pollutants will be able to pass through, and straight into your engine. There is no redundancy built into most systems, and there is therefore no insurance guarding against this harmful intake of airborne dust.
